ABOUT THIS COURSE

Segment Six: The Path of Wisdom and Compassion

Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha Series

An ongoing series of talks with Derek Kolleeny and John Baker

Six Wednesdays, June 20th to August 1st (omitting July 4th)

Join us for our ongoing step-by-step exploration of the authentic of Buddhist path.  This series focuses on the two key aspects of the path - mindfulness-awareness meditation and compassionate insight.  As before, we are exploring the path as presented by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, since his goal was to make these profound teachings relevant for our contemporary lives.

This series is recommended for both beginning and returning meditators and each segment is meant to both stand alone, accessible to new-comers or drop-ins, as well as present a progressive journey.  Each session begins with 45 minutes of meditation in two twenty-minute sessions, followed by a talk and discussion. The talks are presented as a six-week course, but sporadic drop-in attendance is also fine.

This segment is about the path of genuine compassionate activity of the “Bodhisattva”— those who constantly strive to transform their own minds in order to transform the entire world.   Bodhisattva activity is meant to help us transcend the fixed reference points of self and other. This activity includes transcendent generosity, discipline, patience, exertion, meditation and wisdom. When approached in this way, the Bodhisattva’s activity is becomes the union of wisdom and compassion.

Readings for each class are taken from a wide variety of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s writings, and are available online for download and in spiral bound sourcebooks. The sessions are facilitated by a senior teacher of the Westchester Buddhist Center.

Derek Kolleeny and John Baker are two of the founders and senior teachers of the Westchester Buddhist Center. Since 2009, WBC has focused on its mission to authentically present the teachings of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Derek and John both studied directly with Trungpa Rinpoche, and have been practicing and teaching in his tradition for more than 40 years.
