 ABOUT THIS COURSE

Join us for Part II (aka Segments 3 and 4) of Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha, a foundational course following the authentic path of mindfulness-awareness meditation and insight as originally described by the Buddha and expertly transmitted to the West by one of the great Tibetan masters of our time.

This semester we will explore topics in the Mahayana such as the evolution from Hinayana into Mahayana, relative and ultimate bodhicitta, the six paramitas, Atisha's 59 points of mind training, the Heart Sutra, tonglen, and the four immeasurables. We will focus especially on the techniques and stages of meditation and bringing meditation into our daily lives, and will introduce several Mahayana practices. The material will be presented in talks and group discussion.  Readings will be from a wide variety of ChögyamTrungpa Rinpoche’s writings.

The two Winter-Spring 2019 segments are the third and fourth of four making up the full year of our foundational curriculum, and build upon the two segments of Fall 2018. Optimally, participants will experience the four segments in sequence, but there are no prerequisites for enrollment in any segment. In fact, participants are welcome to attend on a class-by-class basis. However, completion of the entire foundational course, or its equivalent in familiarity with the path and practice experience, is a prerequisite for enrollment in the intermediate-level course. We provide a printed source book of readings, (or pdf version for download here). Each class will begin with 30 minutes of meditation, followed by a talk and discussion on the topics covered in the readings.

This series is recommended for both beginning and experienced practitioners. The courses are designed to benefit participants whether or not they can attend regularly. Those who can attend consistently and keep up with the readings will gain an appreciation of the full sequential Tibetan Buddhist path, but any single session would be informative and accessible on a stand-alone basis. Audio recordings of the talks and group discussions will be available online, as always.

The courses will be jointly led by Senior Teacher John Baker and Teachers Julie Farmer and Andrea Sherman, supported by teaching assistants. For their bios, click here.

The two Fall 2018 segments were the first of four making up the full year of our foundational curriculum. The Winter-Spring 2019 segments (above), three and four, will build upon these two. Optimally, participants will experience the four segments in sequence, but there are no prerequisites for enrollment in any segment.
